Lambda Pi Chi Acknowledges National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD)

Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad, Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Incorporated, recognizes National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD) by raising awareness regarding the impact of HIV on U.S. Hispanic/Latino populations, with a special emphasis on Latina health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Hispanics/Latinos account for 21 percent of individuals living with diagnosed HIV in the U.S. and six dependent states, despite representing only 17 percent of the national population. Additionally, since 2014, Latinos account for 24 percent of all new HIV diagnoses. While diagnoses among Latina women have steadily declined over the years, one in 106 Latinas will be diagnosed with HIV within their lifetime.

Through our Project LEAAP (Latinas Educating on AIDS Awareness and Prevention), Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc., promotes AIDS/HIV awareness, education, prevention, and testing throughout the year. Nationwide our chapters participate in local AIDS Walks and conduct silent auctions to fundraise for HIV/AIDS projects. Our chapters also conduct programs such as panels, workshops, discussions, and information tables either on campus or within their larger communities educating individuals on facts, prevention, and how to live a full life after an HIV/AIDS diagnosis.

Lambda Pi Chi is proud to join other advocates on NLAAD to bring attention to this epidemic and engage our communities. Carela, the biological sister of Fanny and sorority member. “As an Hermana myself, I am humbled at the beauty of our organization and the purpose which motivates and continues to drive our efforts in our community. In providing these scholarships we honor not only our dearly departed Hermanas but also our founders and our collective commitment to better the lives of those we touch.”

Lambda Pi Chi Sorority offers members a lifetime network of Hermanas dedicated to themselves and each other, and recognizes that dedication involves continual professional development of members. Gabby was a determined and vivacious woman who was devoted to her family and Hermanas. She was full of creativity and was always there to help and lead with her bright spirit and loving nature.

NEW YORK – Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. is excited to announce that it will be honoring three Proyecto H.A.C.E.R. College Book Scholarship winners at its 25th Anniversary Gala brunch on Sunday, April 14th from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Columbia University’s Wien Hall Lounge, 411 West 116th Street, NY, NY.

Proyecto H.A.C.E.R. (Hermanas Advancing Career and Educational Resources), one of Lambda Pi Chi’s two national philanthropies, assists underrepresented women from marginalized communities in furthering their educational and career goals by providing access to resources. Lambda Pi Chi members utilize their powerful networks to increase awareness of, and access to, educational and financial resources to help women achieve future employment and career opportunities. As part of programming under this national philanthropy, the Proyecto H.A.C.E.R. College Book Scholarship recognizes young women who exemplify academic excellence, leadership potential and community service, in alignment with the Organization's vision, mission and goals.

Award recipients are selected from eligible applicants who reside in the city where the Sorority hosts its Annual National Convention. This year, Lambda Pi Chi will celebrate its 25th Anniversary in New York City; as such, the finalists were selected from a pool of applicants representing high schools from New York City’s five boroughs. At the end of the scholarship selection process, the top three winners were seniors from high schools in the Bronx. “We were thrilled when we realized that our three winners were Bronx students. It moved us to know that although the Bronx is the borough with the poorest district in our nation where you'll find some of our most marginalized struggling daily, it is also where you'll find some of the most inspiring, innovative and driven young people who are overcoming obstacles to be our future leaders,” says Vivian Cortés, the National Vice President of Philanthropy for Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/ Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc.

Darriel McBride, the third place scholarship winner, is a senior at Mott Haven Village Preparatory High School and has received numerous awards in Government, History, Math and for her dedication to community service. Irma Cruz, the second place scholarship winner, is a senior at Urban Assembly for the Performing Arts and will be the first in her family to graduate from high school. Outside of her many academic accomplishments, Irma is most proud of her service to the cancer department at Montefiore Children’s Hospital. Shalena Boca, a senior at Harry S. Truman High School, is this year’s first place winner. Apart from her impressive GPA of 3.8 and many honors, her consistent community service, which includes working with mentally ill children and raising thousands of dollars for breast cancer research, her drive and ambition inspired us to award her the first place. “This year’s anniversary theme is ‘Celebrating Twenty-Five Years of (RE)Defining Leadership’ and we are certain that our three scholarship winners exemplify this and will go on to accomplish great things,” added Vivian Cortés. The College Book Scholarships presented are in the amounts of $500, $250 and $125 in order to assist recipients in offsetting the costs of textbooks, school supplies and other expenses for their first year in college.

THIS WEEK (Aug. 6-10) is the 2012 Latina Week of Action's
¡SOY PODEROSA! (I'M POWERFUL!) Campaign, organized by the National Latina
Institute for Reproductive Health (NLIRH).

Under the rallying cry of their ongoing "¡Soy Poderosa!”
campaign, stories of Latina leadership and civic engagement are being
highlighted. We know that Latinas are actively engaged in shaping our families
and communities. But we aren’t always seen as the powerful constituency that we
are. The ¡Soy Poderosa! campaign puts the work and strength of Latinas at the
forefront.

Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/ Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc.
is supporting the ¡Soy Poderosa! campaign purely in an effort to highlight the
work Latinas, as well as our own Hermanas, are already doing in our respective
communities. As such, Lambda Pi Chi acknowledges
that for all our community service work
WE ARE PODEROSAS.

While Lambda Pi Chi cannot take a formal stand in support of
any of the NLIRH's various reproductive health programs, missions or values, we
feel that the ¡Soy Poderosa! campaign aligns itself with our mission and pursuit
of community empowerment and advancement.
And in support of community service efforts that focus on Latino
populations, Lambda Pi Chi would like to stand in solidarity for the ¡Soy
Poderosa! campaign.

outdoors, and be active. Every year, Worldwide Day of Play is celebrated with
more than 3,500 local events in all 50 states and in 13 countries.

in an issue affecting our youth today, and we couldn’t think of a better way to
combat childhood obesity and directly impact the kids in our community,” said
Maria L. Diaz, National President of Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. "Childhood
obesity has become an epidemic in this country, especially in the Latino community.

overweight and obese children are more likely to suffer from serious, lifelong
illnesses than their healthy-weight peers, and Latino children and adolescents
are at greater risk of overweight and obesity than their white or
African-American peers. Currently, 38.2 percent of Latino children ages 2 to 19
are overweight or obese, compared with 31.7 percent of all children those ages.
