2017 National Youth HIV and AIDS Awareness Day

Today, April 10, 2017, Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/ Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Incorporated, celebrates National Youth HIV & AIDS Awareness Day (NYHAAD). NYHAAD was established in 2013 and was the first annual observance day set aside to recognize the impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic on young people.

A key approach to reach zero regarding the HIV/AIDS epidemic is through prevention and early intervention. According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 1 in 5 new HIV diagnoses in the United States were in young people aged 13-24 years old.

Lambda Pi Chi Sorority Observes National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

NEW YORK (March 10, 2017) - Today, Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Incorporated observes National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NWGHAAD) in alignment with the organization’s national philanthropic effort of L.E.A.A.P: Latinas Educating on AIDS Awareness and Prevention. Lambda Pi Chi use the day to raise awareness online and within the community about women and girls are impacted by HIV/AIDS. 

According to the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there has been a decline in the number of new HIV diagnoses among women by 40% during 2005 and 2014. However, the CDC also acknowledges that 1 in 4 women are living with HIV, and that black/African-American and Hispanic/Latina women continue to be disproportionately impacted by HIV in comparison to their counterparts within other races/ethnicities.

Lambda Pi Chi joins other HIV/AIDS advocates on NWGHAAD seeking to empower women and girls to make the best choices in reducing the spread of the disease. The Sorority promotes educating ourselves and the community about the facts and myths of HIV/AIDS; knowing one’s status through testing; practicing safe sex; and following proper safety guidelines for individuals working within professions who may be in contact with persons or item with the disease.

Lambda Pi Chi Acknowledges National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD)

Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad, Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Incorporated, recognizes National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD) by raising awareness regarding the impact of HIV on U.S. Hispanic/Latino populations, with a special emphasis on Latina health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Hispanics/Latinos account for 21 percent of individuals living with diagnosed HIV in the U.S. and six dependent states, despite representing only 17 percent of the national population. Additionally, since 2014, Latinos account for 24 percent of all new HIV diagnoses. While diagnoses among Latina women have steadily declined over the years, one in 106 Latinas will be diagnosed with HIV within their lifetime.

Through our Project LEAAP (Latinas Educating on AIDS Awareness and Prevention), Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc., promotes AIDS/HIV awareness, education, prevention, and testing throughout the year. Nationwide our chapters participate in local AIDS Walks and conduct silent auctions to fundraise for HIV/AIDS projects. Our chapters also conduct programs such as panels, workshops, discussions, and information tables either on campus or within their larger communities educating individuals on facts, prevention, and how to live a full life after an HIV/AIDS diagnosis.

Lambda Pi Chi Sorority Establishes Two New Scholarships

NEW YORK (July 14, 2016) - Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/ Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Incorporated establishes two new scholarships in memoriam of Hermanas (members) Fanny D. Carela and Gabrielle “Gabby” Elise Oberti. With these two new scholarships the Sorority is able to expand their Proyecto H.A.C.E.R (Hermanas Advancing Career and Educational Resources) initiative, which focuses on building and investing in the Latino, and other underrepresented communities of color. In Spanish hacer means “to make, to build, to do.”

“We are excited that we can offer these two very special scholarships in the memory of our Hermanas. Both Fanny and Gabby were dedicated to La Hermandad (the sisterhood) and La Comunidad (the community). Through their actions, these two strong women of character gave selflessly, so it is very fitting that as we expand our philanthropic efforts we are able to offer awards that improve our communities by edifying individuals,” said Cristina Bañuelos, national president of Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc.

The Fanny D. Carela Legacy Book Scholarship and the Gabby Oberti Hermana Professional Development Scholarship will provide support towards recipients’ economic self-sufficiency and aid in removing barriers towards that advancement. The Fanny D. Carela Legacy Book Scholarship exemplifies the love and devotion Fanny had for her family. Fanny was a caring, loyal, compassionate woman who embodied Hermandad (sisterhood) and nurtured others with her warm smile making any situation better. This scholarship will award $1,000 annually to the child of an Hermana who has been accepted to, or is currently enrolled in, a higher education institution. To further support Fanny’s legacy, the first two grants will be awarded to Layla, class of 2016, the daughter of Fanny and Juan Garcia, an Hermano of La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Incorporated (ΛΥΛ); and their son Ariel, class of 2018.

“Our family is honored and moved with [the Sorority’s]  establishment of this award in honor of our beloved Fanny.  She was an avid reader and would have been especially touched that the award in her memory would be for books.  Our family continues to feel the love, support and incredible example that La Hermandad has played in our lives.  All these years later that network of support that is the Hermandad continues to be a source of strength and nurturing for our family which even in the darkest times has been uplifted by this organization,” said Esther M. Carela, the biological sister of Fanny and sorority member. “As an Hermana myself, I am humbled at the beauty of our organization and the purpose which motivates and continues to drive our efforts in our community. In providing these scholarships we honor not only our dearly departed Hermanas but also our founders and our collective commitment to better the lives of those we touch.”

The Gabby Oberti Hermana Professional Development Scholarship will encourage and support Hermanas in the pursuit of advanced degrees or professional licensure. Lambda Pi Chi Sorority offers members a lifetime network of Hermanas dedicated to themselves and each other, and recognizes that dedication involves continual professional development of members. Gabby was a determined and vivacious woman who was devoted to her family and Hermanas. She was full of creativity and was always there to help and lead with her bright spirit and loving nature. This award honors the ambition and zest of Hermana Gabby Oberti by awarding $1,000 annually to an Hermana who embodies this same drive towards professional development and a commitment to the Sorority.

“We, the Oberti family, are so incredibly thankful for Lambda Pi Chi and all they have done and continue to do in memory of Gabby. Dedication, determination and devotion are three of the strongest words we would use to describe Gabby and the way she lived her life. We hope that this scholarship would be that extra bit of encouragement to the Hermana who is pushing her way through, just like Gabby did,” stated Stephanie Oberti, sister of Gabby Oberti.

These two additional Proyecto H.A.C.E.R scholarships will be funded through individual contributions and all applications will be reviewed through the Sorority’s Scholarship Committee. Hermandad de Mujeres Ofrece Becas a Graduantes de Escuela Secundaria en Tampa, FL

NEW YORK - 5 de mayo de 2016 – Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc., una Hermanded de mujeres universitarias, anualmente ofrece tres Becas Para Libros Universitarios a mujeres jovenes que se van a graduar de una escuela secundaria. Este año va hacer en el área de Tampa Bay, FL. La Hermandad ofrece estas becas como parte de la iniciativa de nuestro Proyecto H.A.C.E.R. (Hermanas Avanzar en Carrera y Recursos Educativos). Las becarias seleccionadas tendrán que estar muy motivadas y activas en el servicio a la comunidad y la excelencia académica. La Beca Para Libros Universitarios ayuda a los seleccionados con los costos de libros y/o materiales escolares durante el primer año de la universidad. Este año, en el 2016, la Hermandad financiará tres premios (por una sola vez):

·        $1,000 para el primer lugar,

·        $500 para el segundo lugar, y

·        $250 para el tercer lugar

"Estoy tan contenta de que somos capaces de llevar nuestras becas a las mujeres jóvenes de Tampa este año," dijo Cristina Banuelos, presidente nacional de Lambda Pi Chi Sorority. “Nuestra Hermandad está comprometida a ayudar a los de bajos ingresos y las mujeres de color, con un énfasis en la latina, para avanzar en sus metas educacionales y sus metas finales. A través de nuestra iniciativa de proyecto H.A.C.E.R somos capaces de ofrecer estas oportunidades y eliminar algunas de las barreras a la educación superior."

Las solicitudes de la Becas Para Libros Universitarios son parte de un proceso competitivo. Durante el proceso de selección, la Comisión de Becas estudiará un logro académico del solicitante, su potencial de liderazgo y participación comunitaria. El Comité examinará todas las aplicaciones y, a continuación, seleccione tres alumnos. La Beca Para Libros Universitatrios está abierto a todos los solicitantes que son:

·        mujeres jóvenes que se esten graduando de la escuela secundaria en el 2016

La Beca Para Libros Universitarios de Lambda Pi Chi Sorority fue creada en 2011 y financiada por donaciones directas de Hermanas de la Hermandad y por las actividades de recaudación de fondos de capítulos locales. Las becas son entregadas a los destinatarios de la ciudad donde se celebra la Convención Nacional Anual de la Hermandad como una manera de dar vuelta e invertir en la comunidad. Lambda Pi Chi Sorority ha podido otorgar becas a mujeres jóvenes graduadas de escuela secundaria en Boston, Baltimore, Cary (NC), Filadelfia, y Nueva York.

Latina Sorority Offers Scholarships to High School Graduates in Tampa, FL

NEW YORK – May 5, 2016 – Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Incorporated awards three annual College Book Scholarships to high school women graduating high school in 2016 from the Tampa Bay area. The Sorority offers these scholarships as part of the Sorority’s Proyecto H.A.C.E.R. (Hermanas Advancing Career and Educational Resources) initiative. The scholarship winners will have to be highly motivated and committed to community service and academic excellence. Book scholarships assist recipients by offsetting the cost of textbooks and/or school supplies during the students’ first year of college. This year the Sorority will fund one-time awards of:

·        $1,000 for first place,

·        $500 for second place, and

·        $250 for third place

“I am so glad we are able to bring our scholarships to the young women of Tampa this year,” said Cristina Bañuelos, national president of Lambda Pi Chi Sorority. “Our Sorority is committed to assisting low-income and/or women of color, with an emphasis on the Latina, to further their educational and ultimate career goals. Through our Proyecto H.A.C.E.R initiative we are able to provide these opportunities and remove some barriers to higher education.”

Applications for the Sorority’s College Book Scholarships are part of a competitive process. During the selection process, the Scholarship Committee will consider an applicant’s academic achievement, leadership potential, and community involvement. The Committee will review all applications and then select three students. The 2016 Lambda Pi Chi annual College Book Scholarship is open to applicants who are:

·        young women

·        2016 graduating high school seniors

·        student of a Tampa area school

·        committed to a higher learning institution

A previous Book Scholarship recipient, Irma C., stated, “Since I am undocumented I do not get any help for my tuition or books. Therefore the scholarship I received helped me pay for my books and save for my tuition. Lambda Pi Chi helped make my dreams come true.”

The Lambda Pi Chi Sorority College Book Scholarship was established in 2011 and funded by direct donations from Sorority members (Hermanas) and by fundraising activities from local Sorority chapters. Book Scholarships are given to recipients from the host city of the Sorority’s annual National Convention as a way to give back and invest in the community. Lambda Pi Chi has been able to award scholarships to young women graduating high school in Boston, Baltimore, Cary (NC), Philadelphia, and New York City.
