History

The creation of a Professional/Graduate Chapter of Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. in the Long Island region was an essential endeavor to address a need for connection and support for both professional Hermanas and current undergraduate Hermanas in the region. As alumnae membership in Long Island grew, some Hermanas found that residing in Long Island made it difficult to attend many Sorority events, and as a result, a close connection to the Sorority was difficult to maintain.

The idea of a Long Island Alumnae Chapter began with the efforts of Janine Morgan, Raquel Corona, and Abigail Hijar-Belifore. Even as undergraduates, both Janine and Raquel had spoken regarding the possibility of one day belonging to a Long Island Pi Chapter in order to continue using the Sorority as a vehicle to enact beneficial change on Long Island. In 2010, as Upsilon Chapter was being chartered with the help of Abi and Janine, further discussion centered around providing a home for the future graduates of this new Chapter.  In January 2013, Marielis Rivera connected with Janine, Raquel, and Abi and discovered the need for a Professional/Graduate Chapter.  Shortly thereafter, Paola Gonzalez and Megan Williams joined the effort to formally establish the Professional/Graduate Chapter.

These six women met consistently to establish events that furthered the mission, vision and goals of the Sorority. Since the establishment of Pi Kappa Chapter in June 2013, they remain excited to continue furthering the ideals of La Cultura Latina, La Comunidad, and La Hermandad.
