History

The Phi Chapter of Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. has a rich history involving a close connection with both the Kappa Chapter at Duke University and the Rho Chapter at North Carolina State University.

On October 31st, 1998, the Kappa Chapter of Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. was founded at Duke University by five women: Lisbert Avila, Paola Gómez, Joia Pardo, Annette Rodríguez, and Solimar Santos. These five women realized that no organization on their campus satisfied their needs for academic excellence, professional advancement, community service, pride in the Latino culture, and women empowerment. Lambda Pi Chi was their outlet for celebrating their Cultura, Comunidad, y Hermandad.

During the following year, two women at the University of North Carolina felt the need to fill the same void that the Kappa Hermanas had seen on their campus. These women wanted an organization that would enrich their undergraduate experience and future endeavors. Just one day before the anniversary of the Kappa Chapter, these women brought Lambda Pi Chi to UNC Chapel Hill’s campus as a joint chapter with Duke University. This process was facilitated by the help of Olivia Rivera, an Hermana of the Fall 1998 Intake Class of Theta Chapter at The George Washington University. The extension of the Kappa Chapter to UNC’s campus was completed on October 30th, 1999 with the crossing of Sussy Portillo and Dawn Anderson.

Throughout the following years, the sorority continued to grow on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill. Finally in the Spring of 2010, the National Executive Board (NEB) of Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. decided to grant UNC recognition of its own chapter. On April 24th, 2010, with the help of UNC Kappa Hermana Stephanie Santiago and two Rho Chapter Hermanas, Jezzette Rivera and María F. Rodríguez, Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. was revived on the UNC Chapel Hill campus as Phi Chapter with the crossing of Christina Jusino and Wendy Tapia, along with their Rho Chapter Line Sister, Ericca Commodore.
