Kappa Chapter |
HistoryThe Kappa Chapter of Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/ Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. was founded on October 31, 1998 by five strong, determined women. Early on in their experiences as undergraduate students, the Kappa Chapter Hermanas realized that no organization on campus satisfied their needs for unity among women, pride in the Latino culture, and involvement in the community. They felt that there was a need for a quality Latina sorority at Duke University, one that would enrich the campus by promoting these ideals. The following year, during the summer of 1999, Olivia Rivera of the Fall 1998 Pledge Class of Theta Chapter, worked with administration and students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to establish the Sorority there. After months of hard work, determination and obstacles, Olivia Rivera and another student, Dawn Anderson, obtained official recognition for Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/ Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. at UNC-CH. On October 30, 1999, one day before the first anniversary of Kappa's founding at Duke University, La Hermandad officially reached the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with the crossing of the Fall 1999 Pledge Class of Sussy Portillo and Dawn Anderson. With the expansion to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. came to find women with the same desire to fulfill that gap which other organizations on campus could not satisfy. Ultimately, in the Spring of 2010, the National Executive Board (NEB) of Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. decided to grant UNC recognition of its own chapter: Phi Chapter. |
