In the Spring of 1991, 13 women came together in search of an organization that would unite and empower Latina women at SUNY Albany. Recognizing that Latinas were absent from leadership positions, these women sought to change this and make a notable difference in the university community. These women, intensely committed to the ideals of community service, leadership and sisterhood, were all actively involved in various student organizations that existed at the university, among them Fuerza Latina, ASUBA, and the Pan-Caribbean Student Association. After many informal discussions about what kind of legacy they wanted to leave behind at their school, these women decided that pledging a sorority that was truly dedicated to professionalism, strong sisterhood and community service, was the ideal contribution they could make to the SUNY Albany community.

These women researched the various organizations on campus, and decided to expand their horizons and look into sororities that were founded outside of the campus. Aware of the groups' strength and commitment to community service, several individuals, greek and non-greek, recommended that the group look into a Latina-based community service sorority founded at Cornell University - Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/ Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. The group contacted the organization and had preliminary discussions with the Hermanas. The group decided to meet the Alpha Chapter in May of 1991 at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY.

Impressed with the large number of community service projects Alpha Chapter was involved with, the manner in which the Hermanas carried themselves, and the future professional goals the Hermanas aimed to achieve, the group decided that this was the type of organization they wanted to bring to SUNY Albany. In the Fall of 1991, the group applied to become a formal interest group for the organization.

On February 28, 1993, after much perseverance and determination, four strong women established the Gamma Chapter of Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/ Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. at the  State University of New York at Albany.
