History

In March of 2010, Chicago alumnae Hermanas - Janie Cisneros, Shaniece McCalla, and Janitza Lopez- were supporting a Greek event at the University of Chicago when they were approached by then junior Pamela Peréz wanting to learn more about Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/ Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. After interacting with Chicago Hermanas and learning more about the Sorority’s vision, mission, and goals, Pamela formally expressed interest in bringing Lambda Pi Chi to University of Chicago in efforts to enhance the collegiate life of undergraduate women.

In the Fall of 2010, Pamela and the Chicago Hermanas began an intense effort to seek women whose values were in alignment with the Sorority and energized to establish the 1st Midwest chapter of Lambda Pi Chi. Sophomore Shayna Coello and junior Swagateeka Panigrahy accepted the challenge and committed themselves to establishing a supportive network for women at the University of Chicago. Pamela, Shayna, and Swagateeka continued to seek other women on their campus who shared their vision. After arduously recruiting and experiencing several expansion challenges, the three women prevailed and were joined by junior Alicia Fullilove who was passionate about bringing Lambda Pi Chi to life at the University of Chicago.

In April 2011, Shayna, Pamela, Swagateeka, and Alicia were prepared to take the necessary steps towards establishing a chapter and determined to make Lambda Pi Chi history in the Midwest. Through the perseverance of their intake committee and propelled by the vision, Chi Chapter was founded on June 6, 2011 at The University of Chicago in Chicago, IL. The members of Chi Chapter desire to embody, not just assert, the values of Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. From community service to academics, from Chicago to their hometowns, Las Hermanas of Chi Chapter strive to empower themselves, their campus, and their communities at large. Perhaps most importantly, Las Hermanas strive to bring out the best in one another

The establishment of Chi would not have been possible without the support of the entire Hermandad. Although many miles away from the nearest chapter, Chi flourishes with leadership due to the guidance and outreach of nuestra Hermandad.
