Alpha Beta Chapter was founded on March 26, 2017 at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) in Durham, North Carolina. This is the first chapter of the Sorority to be established at a Historically Black College/University (HBCU) in the nation. In addition, it is the first Latino Greek-lettered organization and the first NALFO (National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations) Greek-lettered organization to be established on the campus of North Carolina Central University.

With the guidance of alumnae Hermanas - Alejandra Galindo, Kiara Aranda, Elaine Townsend Utin, Daysi Hurtado, and Beatrice Paneto - the Alpha Beta Chapter was founded by a group of five dedicated women who formed part of the small percentage of Latino population on their campus. Although there were other Latino/Hispanic, student-led organizations on their campus, these women still saw a lack of cultural celebration and awareness by their overall student body. With the support of Hermanas from surrounding chapters, Lambda Pi Chi was a part of the start of great resources at NCCU that celebrated not only Hermandad, but also La Comunidad and La Cultura Latina. The chapter’s arrival to campus also enhanced the meaning of Greek Unity as the Sorority received a warm and supportive welcome from the faculty, staff, and student body.
