Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc.'s Statement on SB 1070

Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. adds its name to the growing list of organizations boycotting the upcoming Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors (AFA) and National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations, Inc. (NALFO) meetings if the venue is not changed to express our opposition to SB 1070.

While understanding the situation that led to the passage of the bill, the National Executive Board and membership of Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. cannot quietly stand by as the civil rights of Latinos and others are negatively affected by the implementation of SB 1070. It is our belief that illegal immigration must be addressed; however, this bill is an imprudent attempt to solve a complex issue that is better left to Congress and the President.

As a Latina-focused organization, our members and their families stand to be most affected by the law and other copycat bills. We are specifically concerned about the bill leading to the racial profiling of Latinos and other people of color. This fear is not unfounded given our community's knowledge of, and experience with, racial profiling nationally.

Given the impact of the bill's implementation on communities of color, Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/Lambda Pi ChiSorority, Inc. resolves to take the following actions:

1) Encourage AFA to move its upcoming Annual Meeting from Phoenix, Arizona.

2) Submit a resolution to NALFO requesting a change in venue of the NALFO fall 2010 meeting and requesting that NALFO officially ask AFA to change the venue of their Annual Meeting.

3) Boycott the AFA and NALFO meetings if the venue is not changed.

Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. strongly believes that our commitment to the Latino community extends to all members of the community and any attempt to single out a particular segment puts the civil rights of all at risk.
