The National Executive Board and National Convention Committee invite you to join La Hermandad in Chicago this summer for our 2017 National Convention!

*****

They tried to bury us.  They didn't know we were seeds.

This quote has been a symbol of many communities fighting for self-preservation, such as the Mexican revolutionaries protecting the indigenous and their lands, or the Black community reminding themselves that they are survivors in the face of oppression and violence.  The original phrase can be found in the writings of Dinos Christianopoulos, a Greek poet marginalized for his sexual orientation -- a marginalization that continues to exist today.

Somos Semillas:  Preserving Our Roots, which translates to "We are Seeds:  Preserving Our Roots," relates to this quote in more ways than one.  Our theme reminds us that we come from a lineage of strong foremothers who believed in upholding each other in spaces that did not accept their existence as women of color.  Our essence lies in the struggles of our Founders and their strengths.  This year's theme highlights the importance of acknowledging our self-worth and preserving our Sorority's ideals -- La Comunidad, La Cultura Latina, and La Hermandad.

Our 2017 National Convention will celebrate the preservation of ourselves, our Sorority, and the communities that we come from -- our roots.

This year's convention will take place in Chicago, IL home to a vibrant mix of Latinx communities.  Awe inspiring public murals created by renown Latinx artists decorate the city's historic neighborhoods of Pilsen, Little Village, and Humboldt Park.  Chicago is home to the National Museum of Mexican Art, a national authority of Mexican art with over 7,000 influential pieces spanning from the present to mesoamerican times, and the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture, which offers visual exhibitions, films, and fine art displays celebrating Puerto Rico's rich history.  Finally, take advantage of the hotel's location, which provides access to many of Chicago's iconic tourist destinations such as the Magnificent Mile, Navy Pier, Field Museum of Natural History, Shedd Aquarium, Wrigley Field, Millennium Park, and the shores of Lake Michigan!

See you in Chi-Town!
